The Baby Machine

Martin Varsavsky thought about the reason why immigrants have more children than natives. 10 years ago, immigrants “made” only 1.81 percent of all the babies, now it’s 17.6 percent, but only 8.5 percent of the population are immigrants.

Native spains have a birth rate of 1.3. The migrant’s birth rate is 3! Why it is like it is? That’s the question Martin asks himself. He thinks it’s partly the religion:

Personally, I think that immigrants have more children than natives for other reasons. One reason is religion. Europe is now mostly atheist or agnostic but immigrants are frequently religious and more willing to carry through with unwanted pregnancies.

Of course, the very high birth rate is not the only facor, but I also think it’s a big factor.

(Would be nice to see a big discussion about that interesting subject here).

I have a theory though: Immigrants usually come from poorer economies in their home countries, so when their economic condition goes up, then more conditions are favorable, so…
